Phuket is preparing to introduce a new boat taxi service designed to reduce traffic congestion on the island and improve travel options for both locals and international visitors. The trial service is scheduled to begin this November, offering a greener, more efficient way to explore Phuket’s coastline.
Trial Run and Routes
According to Natchapong Pranit, Director of the Phuket Provincial Port Office, the initial phase will use four catamarans with a passenger capacity of 200 each. These will be supported by electric boats and dozens of speedboats, ensuring flexible and reliable service.
The trial route will begin near the international terminal at Phuket Airport, pass Sirinat National Park, and continue to Patong Beach—one of Phuket’s most visited destinations.
The full loop will cover 16 nautical miles (approximately 31 km) and feature at least 14 floating pier stops, including popular beaches such as:
- Nai Yang
- Nai Thon
- Bang Tao
- Karon
- Kata
- Nai Harn
Each trip is expected to take around 40 minutes, offering a scenic and time-saving alternative to road travel.
A Step Toward a Smarter, Greener Phuket
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat emphasized that the project supports Phuket’s vision of becoming a smart city. By easing road congestion during the high season, the service aims to balance tourism growth with sustainable infrastructure.
To ensure safety and accountability, officials have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). A joint committee will draft regulations, environmental safeguards, and a risk management framework.
Eco-Friendly Floating Piers
Environmental protection is central to the project’s design. Attapol Charoenchansa, Director-General of the DNP, confirmed that the piers will be compact, floating structures modeled after those in Thailand’s national marine parks.
These designs minimize seabed disturbance and reduce risks to sensitive marine habitats, such as sea turtle nesting grounds.
Seasonal Operation
The service will run only during Phuket’s high tourism season (November–April) when sea conditions are favorable. Operations will pause during the southwest monsoon months for safety.
Mr. Natchapong noted that the initiative is more than just a transport upgrade:
“The boat taxi will transform Phuket’s public transit system. It will provide safe, convenient travel for both tourists and locals, while reinforcing Phuket’s reputation as a sustainable, world-class destination.”
